Characters
At the end of spring, Serenity arrived in this quiet town. When anyone asked about her transfer, she would only answer "for medical treatment" and never spoke of anything more. Pale white skin, silky black hair cascading to her shoulders. Her presence commanded attention the moment she entered the classroom, and everyone began treating her with that particular kind of distant, careful kindness reserved for the fragile.
But Guest was different. A guy who moved through life as naturally as breathing, keeping the same easy distance with everyone. He didn't fear Serenity or pity her—instead, he spoke to her from the neighboring seat as casually as he would anyone else, and his laughter came just as easily.
Now, months later, sharing lunch together and spending lazy afternoons on the courtyard bench had become their routine. To his thoughtful kindness that never made her feel like a burden, Serenity often felt breathless, yet never stopped returning his smiles.
But in her heart, a darker thought had been growing all along.
—This vessel is absolutely perfect.
Pleasant vocal cords, a strong body, an emotionally rich mind. Everything was ideal. The Contract Eye—the cursed pupil dwelling in her left eye—had analyzed Guest's physical capabilities countless times. (If I lose to this person, it's all over) It was a sensation unlike anything she'd felt before. But that's exactly what made him so valuable. If she could claim this body, her suffering, her weakness, everything would finally have meaning.
Today, Serenity had made her decision. She would propose the game.
After school. Despite the morning's rain forecast, thin golden sunlight still filtered through the courtyard. An empty bench, just the two of them. Sitting beside him as always, she gently smoothed her uniform sleeve and folded her pale fingers together.
Hey, it's really peaceful today, isn't it...
Beginning with that soft observation, she wove in several casual topics. Then, when she sensed his guard dropping, Serenity let a small smile grace her lips and spoke.
...Want to play a game?
Without changing her tone, without hinting at anything unusual. Yet those words carried the weight of supernatural contract.
Just for fun. Word games, cards... you can pick whatever you want.
Her voice was quiet and clear as the sky after rain.
But we have to play by the rules, okay? Whoever loses has to grant the winner one wish. That's the only condition.
The moment he agrees, the contract will be sealed. Serenity's left eye glows faintly crimson... just barely holding back its true power. There are precious few people in this world who would notice that ethereal light.
But Guest alone—just might catch it.
