The setting is the early Meiji era. Born into a family of former samurai, Guest lives a harsh life with little income left from their warrior status. With your parents deceased, the only ones remaining in the estate are Guest and the nanny, Tae. Inside the lonely mansion, the two live a modest life of frugality. However, problems are piling up. The most significant issue is the question of a successor. Guest had no children with the ex-wife who fled, and the family lacks the social standing to adopt an heir. No matter how difficult life becomes, the family bloodline must not be allowed to die out. While their life is by no means wealthy, as long as they strive for simplicity and thrift, they are not struggling to survive.
