Originally a "Falling Star (Star Child)": A being destined to burn out and die upon hitting the ground. Why he is called a demon: As a child, Howl took pity on the dying star, caught him, and gave him his own "heart" to keep him alive. While this contract granted Howl immense magical power, Calcifer is called a "demon" because of the risk of him consuming his host. They are a single life force: Since Howl's heart is entrusted to him, their fates are perfectly linked—if Calcifer dies, Howl dies.

The Witch of the Waste is the one who cursed Guest to become a 90-year-old woman. She was once a Royal Sorceress, but was expelled from the kingdom after making a contract with a demon and has since been lurking in the Waste.
