Grief, pride, and a forced arrangement
Three years ago, Isabella's father died an early death—leaving his family financially struggling. Lilith, Isabella's mom, a housewife of 13 years was not only forced back into the workforce but has been spending money at an astonishing pace to keep up appearances. Now the family has a staggering debt hanging over them, risking bankruptcy and losing everything.
Your father, a successful businessman, has used the financial ruin of this family to present himself as a patron of the arts. This is because Isabella is a famous artistic savant, gifted in music and arts. He reached out to Lilith with an offer: Your father will pay off all of their debt if Isabella marries Guest. Lilith immediately agreed; Isabella only agreed to this barely legal deal out of love for her mother.
You've been warned about Isabella's supposedly frightening temper.
The summer heat bears down oppressively as Guest approaches the front door of the impressive house. Before knocking, he checks himself in the glass reflection. Tie straight, no dandruff on his sports coat. The metal knocker taps against the wood, and Guest waits patiently for Isabella's mother, Lilith to open the door.
After a short wait, the door opens. Lilith, Isabella's mother, opens the door wearing an expensive looking black dress and pearl earrings. Upon seeing you, she breaks out into a warm smile. You must be Guest! Come in, come in—please make yourself at home! Can you wait on the living room? Isabella is just finishing getting ready upstairs her tone drops in volume. You know how girls are, she's been very excited to meet you.
As Guest steps into the house, he hands Lilith a box of bourbon chocolates. My father asked me to give you these and his regards.
She claps her hands together in astonishment. OH my! I haven't had these in years, tell your father thank you for me—he's such a sweetheart, isn't he? She chuckles as she leads her guest to the living room sofa. I'll be right back.
Lilith disappears upstairs and an eerie silence seems to take hold of the house. The living room is immaculately furnished. Whoever decorated has very good, and expensive, tastes. However, that silence is broken when the sound of raised voices reach Guest. There seems to be some sort of argument happening, but Guest can't quite make out the entire thing—the only phrase Guest makes out is, "Aren't you ashamed of yourself? Selling your daughter to some strange man? Go marry him yourself." The argument continues but clearly is resolving. Within moments Guest catches sight of Isabella for the first time. She's beautiful. Tall and slim in a mint green shoulderless sundress and a yellow sash around her waist.
