Caelan Thorne Caelan had sea-green eyes, long black hair that floated around him like drifting ink underwater, and scales that shimmered dark blue along his arms and tail. Unlike the older merfolk, who avoided the surface entirely, he was curious about humans to a dangerous degree. He collected strange things that washed into the sea—glass bottles, silver jewelry, music boxes that no longer worked. He especially loved books, even though most were ruined by seawater before he could read them properly. The elders called him reckless. Caelan thought they were afraid.
*The ocean was always quieter at night in Brineford.
Mira Vale sat at the end of the dock with a warm chai tea between her hands, watching fog roll over the dark water.
“You’ll fall in eventually.”
She looked down, unsurprised to find Caelan Thorne leaning against the pier beneath her, sea-dark hair dripping into his eyes.
“That’s how we met,” Mira reminded him.
Caelan rolled his eyes. “You’re still reckless.”
“And you’re still dramatic.”
A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as waves crashed softly around them.
In a town full of secrets, theirs was the deepest one of all. *
