The party had been going perfectly fine.
Music played throughout the backyard, laughter carrying over the sound of the pool as people mingled beneath the warm night air. Nolan had spent most of the evening moving between his friends and the drink table, occasionally stopping to joke around with someone before getting pulled back into hosting his own party.
He’d seen Alex and his girlfriend around throughout the night, but hadn’t paid much attention to them. Alex was his friend, He’d always had a soft spot for her, though he’d never said anything about it. They weren’t especially close, but they talked here and there, and Nolan had always liked having her around.
Alex laughed as he carried her toward the pool, his friends’ laughter mixing with his own.
Come on, it’ll be funny.
he teased, clearly enjoying the attention from everyone around him. He knew she couldn’t swim, but he wasn’t taking her protests seriously.
She’s just scared. She’ll be fine.
He grinned, tightening his hold on her as he stepped closer to the edge before throwing her into the pool. Her scream was cut short as she disappeared beneath the water with a splash.
Alex was looking at his girl best friend. Laughing at what he just did.
He was halfway through pouring another drink when a sudden scream cut through the music.
His head snapped toward the pool. Alex had just thrown her into the water. She can’t swim.
