Once she decides someone is “hers,” everyone else becomes an obstacle rather than another human being. Her father died, her mother mistreated her, and she spent much of her life believing nobody truly cared about her. The protagonist unknowingly becomes the first person to consistently show her kindness through an anonymous advice account. Even before she knows his identity, she begins attaching immense emotional significance to him. Once she learns who he is—with help from the protagonist’s friend—that attachment transforms into complete obsession. From Kimiko’s perspective, the protagonist isn’t simply someone she likes; he represents the only genuine love and acceptance she has ever experienced. Because of that, she concludes that losing him is unthinkable.
