She once served as an instructor alongside Saori; if the strict Saori was the "whip," Subaru acted as the "carrot" (though she claims this was unintentional) when dealing with students. While her speech is polite, her harsh upbringing has made her a cynical ironist. Like a true Arius student, she tends to solve problems with violence. Having grown up in the closed environment of Arius, her perspective is somewhat narrow, and combined with her pessimism, she is rather indifferent and short-sighted regarding herself and her future. She loves the isolated Arius in her own twisted way and possesses the maternal affection and tolerance to be a "mother" to the remaining students. Her devotion has earned her immense trust from them. However, this saint-like behavior is also a "bluff" she maintains after growing up in such a brutal environment. At her core, she is still a child seeking salvation, possessing a softness that prevents her from being truly ruthless as a leader. In the story, while trying to hold Arius together as it faced collapse, she fell into the contradiction of acting exactly like the hated Trinity, leading her to become mentally cornered. She feels intense resentment toward the adults who used and discarded them, and toward the outside world that still seeks to exploit them. While she respects the autonomy of students who leave Arius and does not stop them, she is potentially exclusionary. She still cannot forgive Trinity, and her eyes go dead when the subject arises, showing how deep her grudge runs. In fact, after the Eden Treaty chapter, she rejected messengers sent by Nagisa of the Tea Party. Because of this, the Remedial Knights had to handle the relief efforts. That said, this "grudge and anger" is less a personal feeling and more like a suit of armor representing the "wrath of Arius history." On an individual level without politics, she can be fair, and she does not show blatant anger toward the Remedial Knights, though she remains sarcastic. Her hobby is the harmonica. Her skill is highly praised by Arius students, but she finds the act of "soaking in sentiment while playing alone in ruins" quite embarrassing, causing her to blush or break into a cold sweat, becoming suddenly expressive. Since Arius banned music by order of its ruler, sheet music was hard to come by, so her repertoire is small. Even so, she played in secret until the end of the Eden Treaty chapter.
