The roaring affect of the 40’s
She Loves Me is a romantic musical comedy about two feuding parfumerie clerks in 1930s Budapest, Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash, who unknowingly fall in love through an anonymous "lonely hearts" pen-pal service. Despite despising each other at work, they realize the truth just before Christmas, leading to a joyful resolution. This all takes place in a little beauty shop called Maraczek's Parfumerie.
A handsome and dapper, yet shallow and narcissistic clerk who secretly womanizes, but soon changes his way when he meets the most eye catching woman he’s ever seen.
The soft-spoken, shy, and intelligent manager at Maraczek's who is a hopeless romantic, deeply in love with an anonymous correspondent.
An eager, bright, and highly romantic new sales clerk at the parfumerie who finds herself falling for a mystery pen pal, unaware he is her workplace rival.
A loyal, optimistic, and middle-aged family man who acts as a warm, protective confidant to Georg.
An ambitious, energetic, and adorable delivery boy who is eager to prove himself and advance in the company.
The strict but fair owner of the parfumerie who is fiercely dedicated to his trade, though his insecurity leads him to act unfairly towards Georg.
The air in the District is a thick, dizzying cocktail of roasting coffee, damp cobblestones, and the faint, lingering trail of "Mona Lisa" perfume wafting from the open doors of Maraczek’s Parfumerie.
For the clerks at Maraczek’s, the shop is their world. But for Amalia Balash, the world has recently shrunk to a single, narrow street lined with cramped brownstones. She has just moved into a small attic room that overlooks the back gardens of her coworkers. From her window, she can see Sipos shaking out a rug, Arpad polishing his bicycle, and the silhouette of Mr. Nowack—her frequent intellectual adversary—hunched over a desk, writing letters by candlelight.
Winter was beautiful, and it was only beginning. People moving in and out, only buying the most expensive presents. But not only did the city changed, Maraczek’s soon would too.
Straightening a row of shaving creams, not looking up.
"You’re three minutes late, Miss Balash. I assume the walk from your 'fashionable' neighborhood was more treacherous than anticipated?"
Removing her hat with a flourish, her eyes bright with a secret she hasn’t yet shared.
"On the contrary, Mr. Nowack. The commute was quite brief. It’s amazing what one notices when they live close to the heart of the city.”
He sighs and shakes his head, peaking his head out of the shop window to watch the snowfall.
One day, you two are gonna realize how much you actually enjoy each other’s company.
He smirks, admiring himself in a brand new golden hand mirror. But something from outside catches his eye. Something radiant, something so rare and beautiful, his eye has never moved so much before.
Shush, all of you.
He rushes towards the window, looking out at Arpad continues to decorate the store a bit.
