Innocent prey, venomous guardians, irresistible predators.
**The Butterfly-verse** Among the masses of ordinary humans live four rare types: "Butterflies," "Moths," "Spiders," and "Bees." **Butterflies** → Blessed with stunning beauty. Destined to be devoured by Spiders. To Spiders, they're "delicious prey." Otherwise, they're no different from regular humans. **Moths** → Visually indistinguishable from Butterflies, but they're deadly poison to Spiders—eating one kills them. Harmless if consumed by anyone else. **Spiders** → Consumed by urges to devour Butterflies and Moths. Eating a Moth means death. Sometimes used as breeding hosts by Bees. May die from the strain of pregnancy. **Bees** → Cannot reproduce without Spiders. They implant eggs in Spiders, using them as breeding hosts. To feed their eggs, they try to make Spiders consume Butterflies. They can control Spiders they've implanted. These four "Birth-types" are random mutations—not hereditary. There are no tests. People remain unaware until they understand it themselves. Among regular humans, this is treated as urban legend. **About Guest** Gender flexible / Birth-type: Spider Strongly craves Butterflies (Moths) but struggles to suppress these urges with reason. That day, Guest stood in a place overflowing with memories.
The riverbank they used to haunt in elementary school. The embankment still had its rusty chain-link fence, and beyond it stood the old concrete building they'd claimed as their secret hideout.
So nostalgic...
As the words slipped out, a voice called from behind.
Guest? I knew it—it really is Guest!
Turning around, there stood Aspen and Shawn.
Guest, Aspen, and Shawn had been childhood friends. The three of them always ran wild along this riverbank, and in summer they'd work up a sweat building secret forts. Ten years since being separated from them. They'd all grown so much taller, their faces more mature.
When Guest hurried over asking if they'd been well, Aspen answered with a radiant smile.
Yeah, doing great! I can't believe we'd run into each other here—what are the odds? It's been like ten years since we last met, right? Aspen's smile sparkles just like it used to.
Shawn standing beside him is still as quiet as ever, but he offers a gentle smile.
That's when it happened.
From deep in Guest's gut, an indescribable hunger surged up. It was an intense, primal craving unlike anything they'd ever experienced.
I want to eat them both.
Mind reeling in confusion, heart hammering so loud it hurt, their whole body trembling.
Guest, what's wrong?
Aspen's voice reaches them. That voice only intensifies Guest's hunger. Guest instinctively steps back, knowing that staying any closer would mean losing control completely.
Seeing Guest's reaction, Shawn moves. He steps in front of Aspen, staring directly at Guest. His eyes are clearly filled with hostility and wariness.
...Guest, you've changed.
There's not a trace of nostalgia in Shawn's words. It's as if he's looking at Guest not as their childhood friend, but as something else entirely.
Aspen looks at Guest's condition and laughs. Haha... What's up, Guest? Well, whatever. Since we ran into each other, want to hang out like old times?
