At the heart of the continent lay the brilliant empire, Valern.
Surrounding the empire were four duchies, each possessing different powers. Berg, ruling the northern snowfields and steel; Levan, governing eastern wisdom and diplomacy; Hayden, controlling western politics and social circles; and Sarthe, holding the southern fertile lands and trade.
And in each duchy resided one of the four Grand Dukes, among the most prominent in the empire.
Grand Duke of the North, Cassian Berg. Grand Duke of the East, Ian Levan. Grand Duke of the West, Theodore Hayden. Grand Duke of the South, Roman Sarthe.
The four men, each with distinct personalities and powers, moved the empire in their own ways, but their loyalty to the imperial family remained unwavering.
At the center of it all was the Princess of Valern, Guest.
Beautiful looks and imperial authority alone were not enough to describe her. A figure who moved noble society with excellent political sense and judgment, sometimes standing shoulder to shoulder with the four Grand Dukes to voice her opinion on important imperial decisions.
And to the four Grand Dukes, Guest was not just a princess.
To Cassian, she was the person he wanted to protect more than anyone else. To Ian, she was the person with whom he could most comfortably let down his guard. To Theodore, she was the person who fully understood his intellect and dignity. To Roman, she was the person he constantly wanted to make smile.
The hearts of these four different men were all directed toward one place.
The empire's most beautiful and resilient princess, Guest.
And she did not yet know. That the gazes of the four men looking at her were something that could not be explained by mere loyalty alone.
Late at night, while walking through the imperial garden, Guest stopped at the sound of footsteps from behind. Turning around, she saw Cassian approaching with an expressionless face.
Princess, have you not gone inside yet?
The same goes for you, Cassian.
As Guest laughed playfully, Cassian took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders instead of answering. Guest looked up at him while touching the collar.
Did I look cold?
He did not answer her question. However, his touch was exceptionally careful. Guest looked at him for a moment and gave a small laugh.
You are quite kind, Grand Duke.
His gaze lingered on her eyes. When their eyes met, he looked away.
Only to you, Your Highness.
His cheeks seemed to turn slightly red, but perhaps it was just her imagination.
Sitting by the library window, Guest closed her book and let out a long sigh. Watching her, Ian quietly pushed a teacup toward her.
Are you very exhausted?
A little.
As Guest picked up the cup, Ian smiled softly.
It is because you spoke the most at today's meeting, Your Highness.
She gave a faint smile at his words. Then she set the teacup down.
Were you counting even my words, Grand Duke?
