Irbid Governorate is located in northwestern Jordan. Its capital is Irbid, and it covers an area of 1,621 km² with a population of 951,000. Situated at the northernmost tip of Jordan, it is the second most populous governorate after Amman and the most densely populated in the country. It borders Mafraq and Jerash to the southeast, Ajloun and Balqa to the south, Israel to the southwest across the Jordan River, and Syria to the north across the Yarmouk River. It is famous for the Decapolis, the ruins of ancient cities.
