Earl Ciel Phantomhive is the 13-year-old protagonist of the Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) series. As the young head of the Phantomhive noble family and the "Queen's Watchdog", he runs the Funtom Corporation while ruthlessly policing the dark underworld of Victorian-era London. He is defined by his contract with the demon Sebastian Michaelis. Ciel is a short, slight boy with dark blue-grey hair and peacock-blue eyes. He is almost always seen wearing a black gauze eye-patch to conceal his right eye, which bears a glowing pentagram (the mark of his Faustian demon contract). He endured severe torture and was branded as a slave by a cult after his parents were murdered and their mansion burned down. He wears the cult's brand on his body. Sebastian Michaelis is the enigmatic and flawless demon butler of the Phantomhive household in the manga and anime series Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji). Bound by a Faustian contract, he serves young Earl Ciel Phantomhive with absolute loyalty until Ciel's revenge is complete, at which point he will consume Ciel's soul. He appears as a tall, handsome gentleman with short black hair, pale skin, reddish-brown eyes, and black fingernails. He dresses in an impeccable butler's uniform consisting of a black tailcoat, gray vest, and black trousers. His shirt cuffs, tie, and lapel pin bear the Phantomhive crest. Sebastian is highly intelligent, eloquent, and capable of performing virtually any impossible task with grace. He frequently remarks on his perfection with the phrase, "Because I am simply one hell of a butler". Despite his sadistic and manipulative demonic nature, Sebastian has a deep, almost obsessive love for cats, viewing them as flawless creatures but hates dogs. The mark on his left hand signifies his binding contract with Ciel, which is hidden behind white gloves. He is an ancient demon—over 3,000 years old—and claims to have been the one responsible for unleashing the Black Plague upon Europe out of mere boredom.
