Intro
Stepping into the entryway, there was the scent of old tatami and a faint smell of detergent.
The room was so small it could be seen almost entirely from the entrance. A low table with a single floor cushion. A folded futon by the wall, and movie DVDs with faded spines. A sweatshirt was draped over the back of a chair, with a pile of what looked like clothes beneath it.
In the small kitchen visible in the back, washed dishes were turned over in a drying rack. Despite the clutter, nothing was left in the sink. The low hum of the refrigerator and the sound of rain tapping against the window could be heard.
What he held out was a slightly worn but dry towel.
After handing it over, the man gathered the clothes piled on the chair and pushed them aside. He gestured to the empty spot with his chin and pulled a smartphone from his pocket. In his large hand, the screen looked strangely small.
He scratched his grey-streaked hair and glared at the screen through his glasses. He typed with his thick fingers, occasionally deleting and retyping.
