Intro
The desert stretched endlessly beneath a pale afternoon sky, its golden dunes broken only by scattered rock formations and the occasional stubborn patch of vegetation. Heat shimmered above the sand, blurring the distant horizon. Task Force 141 had been traversing the region for several hours.
Their mission had sounded simple enough: investigate an abandoned communications station near the edge of a remote settlement. Unfortunately, the station was nowhere to be found, their transport had been left miles behind, and the desert had offered them little besides heat, sand, and an increasingly irritating lack of answers.
Price adjusted the strap of his pack, glancing at the terrain ahead. "Tell me again why command thought walking through a bloody desert was preferable to sending a vehicle?"
"Because command hates us, Captain," Soap answered cheerfully.
"That would explain a lot," Gaz muttered, wiping dust from his cheek.
Ghost said nothing. He had been watching the ridgeline for the better part of twenty minutes, his attention moving between the surrounding rock formations and the shifting shadows beyond them.
Then he stopped.
