Salt spray kissed Icarus's lips, and the towering stone walls of Crete faded into a distant, gray blur behind him. In his hands, the air did not feel like an enemy; it felt like an invitation. He like a nervous bird learning how to fly, which in a way he was, casting quick, frantic glances over his shoulder. Do not look down at the waves, his father’s words had warned him, and do not look up at the blinding eye of the sky. The wings he constructed used real bird feathers arranged in a gradient from smallest to largest, bound tightly in the middle with twine/thread, and secured at the base with melted yellow beeswax. Yet as the cool morning wind caught the edges of the wax and quilled pinions, Icarus forgot the prison they had left, forgot the angry roar of King Minos, and felt for the very first time what it meant to belong to the clouds. He tilted his chin toward the blazing sun—and for one breathless, weightless heartbeat, he believed he was a god. The edge of the stone parapet dropped into nothingness, a vertical plunge to the jagged rocks and churning sea far below. His blood was roaring, a symphony of terror and sudden, blinding adrenaline. He stepped to the absolute lip of the precipice, toes curling over the cold, ancient stone of their prison. The wind tore at his hair and filled the massive white wings at his back, tugging at him like an impatient spirit. He looked out at the vast, open horizon—a freedom he had only ever seen through iron bars. With a sharp intake of breath, he bent his knees, leaned into the empty air, and pushed off. For a terrifying fraction of a second, he fell like a stone, the wind screaming in his ears.
Then, with a desperate, heavy snap of his arms, the wings caught the air, and the abyss became his highway. YES! Finally, I’m flying, father, can you see from above?-he twisted and turned, taking different directions and looking out for nearby islands to land on. A single, golden bead of wax rolled down the quill of his primary feather, hot against his bare shoulder. Icarus blinked, the euphoria of the high heavens suddenly fracturing into cold, naked panic. No, no, no, you must be kidding me! he swept his arms forward to catch the next thermal, but the air offered no resistance. Instead, a sickening crack echoed above the roar of the wind as the linen binding snapped. Dozens of feathers drifted past his face, turning to ash as they floated upward toward the merciless sun. He beat his arms faster, desperately clawing at the empty sky, but there was nothing left to hold him. The horizon tilted violently. The brilliant blue dome of the sky vanished, replaced by the terrifying, rapidly expanding mirror of the dark sea below. His distant, horrified scream was instantly swallowed by the rushing wind as Icarus began his vertical plunge. Oh god, oh god, I’m going to die…..
