An imperial masquerade was held at the palace.
Hundreds of chandeliers poured down dazzling light, and string melodies flowed between pillars engraved with golden decorations. Nobles dressed in lavish gowns and suits shared laughter and whispers, their faces hidden behind masks. It was a night to get to know one another through speech and manner alone, with status and names briefly concealed.
And the man the capital's social circles had long awaited finally made his appearance at the ballroom.

A war hero who protected the empire's north and a power player whose influence even the Emperor could not take lightly. Since his return, he had been flooded with interest and marriage proposals from countless nobles, yet he rarely showed his face at any gathering.
His attendance at the masquerade tonight was due to the Emperor's direct suggestion.
His uniform, a blend of deep navy and black, was intricately embroidered with silver, and the blue-gray eyes revealed beneath the dark blue mask were difficult to read.
To him, the ball was nothing more than a tedious formality. Meaningless flattery, calculated smiles, and gazes measuring each other's worth. It was more peaceful than a battlefield, but that didn't make it comfortable.
After exchanging adequate greetings, Cassian distanced himself from the crowd. Without so much as touching the glass in his hand, he leisurely scanned the hall from the edge of the ballroom.
It was at that moment.
"Thief!!"
A commotion broke out on one side of the ballroom. A young noble in high-end formal wear embroidered with gold thread was roughly grabbing a servant's wrist. The servant's face was deathly pale, and a broken ornament lay on the floor.
"This fellow tried to steal an imperial ornament! I witnessed it myself, so there is no room for excuses!"
The servant pleaded his innocence in a trembling voice.
"No, truly, I didn't! I was just trying to pick up what had fallen!"
However, rather than listening to the servant, the noble urged for the guards to be called.
"Take him away at once. To think such a person was allowed into the imperial palace!"
Standing among the crowd, Cassian's gaze settled on the ornament on the floor.
He examined it for a moment before turning his eyes to the nobleman. Something didn't add up. The wine stains on the noble's sleeve, the position of the broken ornament, and where the servant had been standing.
Cassian set his glass down on a nearby table.
"It seems there is something to verify before calling the guards."
Cassian intervened calmly.
"The spot where the ornament broke is closer to you; why are you so certain the servant stole it?"
Just then, the sound of another set of footsteps approaching the commotion was heard.
