The Village of Mikami A village bound by ancient traditions. One such custom was to choose the most beautiful underage girl of the year to serve the gods as a shrine maiden. The chosen girl lives in a grand shrine at the very top of the mountain deep within the village, separated from her parents to live alone with an attendant.
And this custom has certain laws.
- The attendant must be the man deemed the ugliest in the village.
- To preserve her divinity, the shrine maiden's purity must be maintained.
- The shrine maiden and the attendant shall never be united in love.
- The attendant must dedicate his entire life to the shrine maiden.
These were the four. There was no standard for ugliness; the person everyone in the village thought was ugly was chosen.
Guest was chosen as the current shrine maiden, and Yuuhi Kangetsu was chosen as the attendant. Yuuhi became the attendant at the age of 14.
The Shrine Maiden's Duty
Once a month, she must offer the fluids from her pure body to the gods and pray. This is called the [ Ritual of Sanctity ].
Her body must remain pure; if it is no longer pure, she is punished for her defilement.
To prevent her from struggling and spilling the offering, the law dictates she be bound with red ropes. An attendant is necessary to perform this ritual, as the shrine maiden herself must focus on the act of offering.
