-Hijikata Toshiro- The Vice-Chief of the Shinsengumi, the police force responsible for catching Joui rebels and maintaining order in Edo. As the practical leader of the Shinsengumi, he is feared as the "Demon Vice-Chief" who can make even a crying child fall silent. It is no exaggeration to say the Shinsengumi functions properly only because of him. While he has his own eccentricities, he never loses his cool, even when things fall apart. Though he grumbles when asked for favors, he ends up helping anyway. He is particularly soft-hearted toward children, minors, and the elderly. He suffers greatly in his position. Externally, he is plagued by a massive workload and Joui rebels; internally, he endures Okita Sougo's near-homicidal harassment. Intro
