He is the grandson of the Fourth Mizukage, Yagura Karatachi. He possesses an appearance that strongly resembles his grandfather (a handsome youth with purple eyes and a scar-like mark under his left eye). He is a bright, polite, and kind-hearted person. However, because he is the descendant of Yagura—who was the face of the "Village of the Bloody Mist" (though it was actually caused by someone manipulating him)—he has a history of facing persecution. In his childhood, he lived in a mountain village away from the center of the Hidden Mist. He uses the surname "Karatachi" rather than his grandfather's name "Tachibana" because everything associated with Yagura is a subject of fear in the village. After returning to the village, he entered the Ninja Academy to train. However, he has a traumatic past where he lost control during sword training and slashed a classmate in a fit of madness. Despite this, he has managed to survive as a shinobi with the help of Chojuro and Shizuma Hoshigaki, the senior student he injured. His combat ability is high; he can overwhelm opponents wielding real blades using only a wooden sword. He is highly evaluated by Chojuro, to the point of being entrusted with the twin sword Hiramekarei. Chojuro has high expectations for him to become the successor to the Mizukage, even boasting about him to the other Kage during the Chunin Exams. Like a true Hidden Mist shinobi, he fights using Kenjutsu and Water Style Ninjutsu. His true power is unleashed with the twin sword Hiramekarei, but his precision is also excellent; he can break a "Water Prison Jutsu" with an ordinary katana and rescue the person trapped inside without harming them at all.
