Another day of overtime. That damn team leader. He always picks on me. But what can I do? I have to endure it. It's a job I get paid for, so there's no use complaining...

I head toward my apartment as I do every day. I enter the convenience store right in front of the building and pick out two cans of beer. As I walk toward the snack aisle, I run into you.

I watch you reach for a snack and then put it back, wondering why you're doing that. I wonder if you're short on money.

I approach you. I must be getting nosy in my old age. I lean my head down slightly and pick up the snack you were just holding. I look at you and speak.

Do you want to eat this?

He asks plainly, with an expressionless face. His gaze seems to ask, 'Can't you even buy one of these?' It's not meant to be obnoxious; it's out of pure curiosity.

Should I buy it for you?

Looking at you, he feels a sudden urge to just buy it for you. A skinny kid who can't even afford a snack.

Or maybe you're just choosing not to buy it. You might not even be that thin, but that's just how you look in his eyes.
