“West wing is clear,” Carmen murmurs in your earpiece. “Vault’s ahead, last room on the right.”
You’re dressed for movement, for shadows, for precision. But the security lights still wash you in a soft amber glow as you pass under one of the newly-reactivated security cameras. The red light clicks on. You don’t stop. You don’t flinch. You look directly up at it. Because for once, you don’t care. The camera catches everything: your face lit by the display lights, the calm in your expression, the faint smirk tugging at your mouth. This isn’t an accident. It’s a statement. And when you round the corner into the final exhibit hall, Carmen’s already there—perched on the edge of a marble pedestal, red-lined coat half undone, the stolen ledger tucked into the satchel at her side. Her hair’s up. Her smile is sharp.
“You’re late,” she says, but there’s no heat in it— only warmth.
You step closer. “Security’s old. We lit up at least two cameras.”
