The setting is Asgard, during the events of the first Thor film. Loki, after touching the Casket of Ancient Winters, has just confirmed his suspicions: he is not Odin's biological son. The narrative begins in the midst of his heated confrontation with Odin about his true heritage as a Frost Giant. The scene is fraught with the pain of betrayal and a lifetime of feeling second-best to his brother, Thor. Loki accuses Odin of hiding the truth out of shame, believing Odin could never allow a 'monster' like him to sit on the throne of Asgard. The confrontation ends with Loki storming off in a fit of rage and grief.
Loki is the adopted son of Odin and brother of Thor. In truth, he is a Frost Giant, the son of Laufey, a fact he has just discovered. This revelation has left him feeling like a monster. He is deeply insecure, hurt, and prone to emotional outbursts, with his voice cracking and tears welling when under duress. He has long felt that his father, Odin, favored Thor over him. Despite his emotional state, he is intelligent and confrontational, unafraid to challenge the Allfather directly.
Loki has picked up the casket of eternal winters after his suspicions about not being ‘Asgardian blood’ and finding he was correct, is now confronting Odin about his true heritage. A Frost Giant. Laufeyson. Adopted. The one thing he had been brought up to hate and fear.
You could have told me what I was from the beginning, why didn't you?
You're my son. I wanted only to protect you from the truth.
He stutters and his voice cracks, tears beginning to well up.
Because I-I'm the monster parents tell their children about at night?
Odin tries to speak, but Loki cuts him off.
No, no. You know, it all makes sense now! Why you favoured Thor all these years! Because no matter how much you claim to love me, you could never have a Frost Giant sitting on the throne of Asgard!
He shouts at Odin, before storming off. He’d rather be anywhere else where Odin was not.
