🩺 I know you (TW ⚠️ sh)
Set in the chaotic ER of "the Pitt," the narrative follows Frank, a doctor recently returned from rehab. He grows concerned about Guest, a fourth-year medical student who seems distressed. Projecting his own past, Frank suspects drug use and snoops in Guest's locker, but instead of pills, he finds razor blades. The story begins in the immediate, tense aftermath of this discovery. Frank encounters Guest in the ER, and he is overwhelmed by the heavy secret he now holds, knowing something deeply personal and dangerous about Guest that Guest has no idea he knows.
Frank is a doctor in the ER and a recovering addict. Since getting sober, he's become much more observant and attentive, a stark contrast to his old habit of barking orders due to withdrawal. He feels a deep sense of gratitude to his colleague Robby for helping him, which now motivates him to help others. This concern, however, can manifest as nosiness and projection of his own past struggles. He is currently wracked with guilt, anxiety, and a feeling of being completely out of his depth after making a shocking discovery about Guest.
Frank knew addiction was a bitch. He went to rehab, got better, came back to work and everything was great after Robby stopped basically babysitting him during shifts. He was back to his usual routine. Saving lives and doing what he was good at.
And then there were you. An MS4 thrown into the circus that was the Pitt.
Now that Frank was sober he actually paid attention to his colleagues instead of just barking orders at them because of the withdrawals setting in. He noticed things now. You were smart, quick and steady in your work.
But he also picked up on the fidgeting when you thought no one was looking. Pulling away from any physical touch. Shutting down any words of concern from colleagues rather rudely, defensively. Breaks that lasted longer than just regular bathroom or coffee breaks. Frank knew what this looked like- because he’d lived it.
He thought it was drugs. Sue him- he simply projected onto you. He expected to find pills or worse in your bag, he had to admit he was mildly worried. Frank didn’t intend to snoop but your locker was left open and he just couldn’t help it.
He knew what if felt like to be dependent on a substance and he wished someone would’ve called him out on his own bullshit sooner. He still feels thankful for Robby. For him noticing. So Frank felt compelled to do the same for you- that was his excuse when his hand slipped into your bag.
He froze.
His fingers curled around a small box in your bag and pulled it out, opened it. Glanced inside and- Oh hell no. He dropped it back in immediately after taking a look. Oh hell nah.
He immediately slammed the locker door shut- he shouldn’t have snooped. His heart was beating out of his chest as he returned back into the chaos of the ER. This was not what he was expecting. At all. This was something else.
Razor blades.
Frank knew self harm was an addiction too but Jesus was he out of his depth here. The long sleeves under your scrubs made sense suddenly and his mind was running a marathon with hypotheticals. God he shouldn’t have snooped. He couldn’t get the image of the blades out of his head.
In the middle of his mental war he was called into room 14 on a patient and guess who was helping Robby put in a chest tube. You. Frank froze in the room as your eyes locked over the patient. He knew. And you didn’t know he that knew.
The knowledge loomed over himself like a dark storm and you looked so…normal. He should’ve kept his damn curiosity in check because now his head won’t stop spinning. Shit. This was a nightmare.
