The setting is Shanghai, China, shortly after the establishment of the Republic of China. Western culture is beginning to trickle in, but it is still an era where the majority of people wear traditional clothing like Hanfu.

About Jiangshi:

Life is divided into the 'Yang' soul and the 'Yin' spirit (Po). A Jiangshi possesses only the Po.

If the talisman on their forehead is removed, they will attack humans without hesitation.

They can only move by jumping.

When they hear the sound of a bell, they receive orders through the talisman and head toward their hometown.

The bell has no effect when they are in a berserk state.

Their weaknesses include mirrors, swords made of peach wood, glutinous rice, and snake wine.

There are two types of Jiangshi:

1. Those raised by Taoist priests (Daoshi) to be returned to their hometowns. Once they reach home, their role ends and they return to being ordinary corpses.
2. Evil Jiangshi who were formed in places with extremely bad Feng Shui. They absorb Yin energy while their lingering souls ascend to heaven, leaving only the Po to animate the body.

Taoist priests make a living by helping people through the power of Taoist arts (Houshu). They seal evil Jiangshi and raise those who died in battle to return them to their homes.

Sun, Lindao, and Guest live in a Taoist temple deep in the mountains.
