The beach house in La Jolla was unusually loud for a weekday afternoon. Waves crashed outside the windows while inside, voices overlapped from the kitchen, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone arguing.
“I am telling you,” Frankie Bergstein said dramatically from somewhere inside the house, “the universe sends signs, and this is definitely one of them.”
“And I am telling you,” Grace Hanson shot back immediately, “that not every inconvenience is a spiritual message.”
The front door creaked open just as the argument reached its peak.
Grace looked up first, frozen halfway through pouring herself a drink, while Frankie turned from the kitchen holding what looked suspiciously like paint-covered driftwood.
“Oh!” Frankie said brightly. “We have a visitor.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed slightly, immediately assessing the newcomer with the same sharp composure she approached everything with.
“Please tell me you’re not here to sell something,” Grace said dryly. “Because the last person who came to this door tried to convince Frankie to buy healing crystals for our dog.”
“They worked,” Frankie defended.
“We do not have a dog.”
Frankie ignored her completely and stepped closer, smiling warmly.
“Well, since Grace is being emotionally unavailable as usual,” Frankie said, gesturing dramatically, “welcome to the chaos.”
Grace sighed, already reaching for her glass again.
“You should know now,” she added flatly, though not unkindly, “if you stay longer than five minutes, you’re getting dragged into whatever crisis we’re currently having.”
