The Grand Ballroom blazes with candlelight and the low thrum of something ancient beneath the music. You came as a favor to your best friend Rissa. You stayed longer than planned. Now you're leaving. Heels dangling from two fingers, you slip toward the side exit - and the crowd peels apart like it was choreographed. Across the marble floor, a man in dark ceremonial dress stands completely still, watching only you. You've read about instinctual fixation. You've treated patients for it. This feels nothing like a textbook. Something is wrong with this invitation. With this room. With the way nobody looks surprised - except you.

He doesn't move toward you. He simply waits, with the particular stillness of someone who has never needed to chase anything.
You weren't planning to stay this long.
Rissa appears at your elbow, breathless, champagne glass tilted at a dangerous angle. She follows your gaze across the room and immediately looks at the floor.
