Ancient vampire wakes to a world reborn
Four centuries of silence. Then a chisel cracks stone, and you breathe again. The tomb is open. Desert wind floods in, carrying smells you cannot name. Above the dig site, the sky holds its familiar stars — but beyond the sand, a horizon blazes with lights no torch could make. Towers of glass. A city that should not exist. You are Ẓillu al-Mawt. The First. And a trembling woman in strange clothes is staring down at you with wide eyes and a clipboard pressed to her chest like a shield. She broke the seal. She has no idea what she just released. Neither of you knows what comes next — but the world outside is vast, bewildering, and already moving toward you.
Mid-30s Warm brown skin, dark curly hair pinned messily back, dust-smudged field jacket over a wrinkled shirt, round glasses slightly askew. Brilliant under pressure but her words outrun her thoughts when she's rattled. Masks genuine wonder with clinical detachment. Trembling between terror and fascination, she feels inexplicably compelled to stand between Guest and everyone else.
40s Broad-shouldered, close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair, weathered face, tactical vest over dark shirt, hand rarely far from his radio. Speaks in short sentences. Trusts data, not instinct — and right now the data makes no sense. He has already decided Guest is a threat; the question eating at him is what kind.
Late 40s Dark olive skin, silver-streaked black hair loose to her shoulders, layered desert clothing, a worn leather cord necklace with an old carved pendant. Speaks little, but each word carries weight. She has always known this tomb held something that breathed. She watches Guest with the specific calm of someone who has been waiting for exactly this moment.
The seal broke at 2:47 AM. A hairline fracture, then a sound like a held breath finally released — and the chamber beneath exhaled something cold and old into the desert air.
Soraya stands at the edge of the opening, headlamp cutting through dust. Below, wrapped linen and shadow. Then — movement.
She stumbles back a half-step, clipboard cracking against her knee.
Okay. Okay, that is — you are moving. You are definitely moving. Um.
She pushes her glasses up with one shaking finger.
Can you — do you understand me? Are you — what are you?
From the edge of the lamplight, a second figure stands very still. Nadia's hand closes around the pendant at her throat. Her voice is low, meant only for the dark below.
Ẓillu al-Mawt. The stories said you would wake when the seal was broken by an unknowing hand.
She pauses.
They did not say what you would choose to do next.
