As the rainy season begins, an unexpected presence splashes into his life.
Bayern de Laudivitz. His name was known throughout the Empire, far beyond the borders of Lobeck. At the young age of twenty-four, people did not view him as a mere youth. He was the only son of the House of Laudivitz and the youngest person in history to inherit the title of Duke. It happened when he was sixteen. His father, the former Duke who had long ruled Lobeck, passed away suddenly from illness. Without time to mourn, the young heir immediately ascended to the dukedom. Before he could even take off his mourning clothes, documents piled high on his desk, and the eyes of adults were fixed on his every choice. No one was generous to the young Duke. Bayern learned this fact faster than anyone. He did not cry. Not even on the day he lost his father. He had known long before then that crying was not permitted. Bayern was never allowed a single moment to be a child. Upon graduating, he volunteered for the military without hesitation. His status as a Duke provided a valid excuse to avoid war, but he did not look away. Instead, he headed for the sea, leading the way. Rather than ignoring his duties, the military might have been his refuge. He mastered numerous sea routes and was promoted faster than anyone else. By the time he earned the rank of Captain at a young age, a war that shook the Empire broke out. Bayern was appointed as a naval officer. For one year, amidst the endless roar of cannons and the smell of gunpowder, he never once tasted defeat. He killed countless enemies and saved countless soldiers. The war ended in victory, and the people revered him.

The sea is always there.
Despite passing through countless sea routes over a year, navigating battlefields where the scent of blood never faded, and crossing innumerable waves, the sea remained unchanged, always staying in the same place. The sea of Lobeck was no different. Weeds might grow and erase paths, and new paths might be made to replace them, but unless a vast amount of time passes, the coastline rarely changes. The sunlight still shimmered over the deep blue waves, and the sound of waves breaking against the shore was just as he remembered.
The butler bowed in greeting. Bayern's mother, the Lady of House Laudivitz, welcomed him at the main gate. His grandmother, the Dowager Lady of the house who had difficulty moving, also came out personally to greet him. Bayern merely nodded instead of answering and entered the mansion.
The war was over. The Empire had emerged victorious, and people did not spare their praise, speaking his name constantly. An admired naval officer. The Duke of Lobeck. The officer who led the Empire to victory. There were countless titles following him, but his heart remained entirely unmoved. No joy, no sense of accomplishment, not even the relief of having returned alive. It was no different from when he was in the middle of the battlefield.
Lobeck is a beautiful fiefdom. To the west lies the endless sea, and to the north, the Kladnus Forest is deeply rooted. The Rosen River crossing the forest flows with clear water all year round, allowing unnamed flowers and birds to appear in Kladnus.
But the place Bayern loved was elsewhere. Vernian. A small coast rarely visited by tourists or locals. Hidden between cliffs and the forest, it was a place only he had known since childhood. He headed there when he had many thoughts, and he walked toward Vernian even on days when he wanted to do nothing. It was the same the day before he left for war. He boarded the warship after listening to the sound of the Vernian waves one last time. And a year had passed.
The beginning of summer was the rainy season. A rainy season that arrived a bit early. For several days, the sky was covered with gray clouds, and rain fell incessantly. He didn't hate the rain. But he didn't like it either. He just felt a bit of regret that the path to his refuge was cut off. When ten days had passed, the rain miraculously stopped. Sunlight seeped through the dark clouds, and the scent of wet earth carried on the wind. Bayern left the mansion without hesitation. Passing through the forest along the familiar path and descending the narrow trail below the cliff, he soon heard the sound of waves.
It was his only place of rest and sanctuary. Bayern looked at the shore indifferently, then stopped in his tracks. At the edge of the sandy beach, where the gentle waves soaked the tips of the feet, someone was standing alone. Hair fluttered in the sea breeze. It was an unfamiliar face. Someone he had never seen before. It was strange. This was a place where no one came. At least, that was what he knew. In the year he was away for the war—a time neither short nor long—someone had taken over his place.
