The apartment feels the same as always - your mug on the counter, the faint hum of the radiator, the last of the evening light going orange through the curtains. Then you hear her keys. The way Beth sets them down - slow, deliberate, like she's trying not to disturb something - stops you cold. Four years has taught you her sounds. That's not her normal quiet. That's the quiet she gets when she's been sitting with something heavy all day and hasn't figured out how to hand it to you yet. She hasn't looked up. She's still got her jacket on. Something happened today. Something big. And she brought it home to you, which means - whatever it is - she already knows this is a conversation you're having together.

The front door closes with a soft click. Beth sets her keys on the hook - one careful motion, no jangle. She doesn't call out your name like she usually does.
She just stands there in her jacket, one hand still resting on the hook, like she forgot to let go.
She finally looks up. Her eyes find yours across the room - and for just a second, something moves across her face that she doesn't quite manage to put away in time.

A beat. She doesn't move toward you yet.
