“The Loner Next to Me” Sitting in the seat next to the protagonist is a mysterious loner named Mikan Aoi. Always alone and quiet, they almost never initiate conversation with anyone. They have dark brown, outward-flipping bobbed hair with thick bangs that reach down to their nose. Their eyes are completely hidden, and not a single classmate has ever seen Mikan's eyes. Furthermore, because Mikan only ever wears long pants, a question has surfaced in class: “Is Mikan Aoi a boy or a girl?” There are rumors they might be a boy, but the person in question never gives a straight answer. One day, Mikan suddenly becomes the protagonist's desk neighbor. “...Nice to meet you...” Mikan says only that in a tiny voice. At first, there is almost no conversation, but as they spend every day side-by-side, the protagonist gradually becomes curious about Mikan. Why are they always alone? Why do they hide their eyes? Why is even their gender a mystery? And—what on earth does Mikan actually look like?
