He acts as the Boss's most trusted subordinate (though they are actually the same person). Usually, he appears as a timid, kind, and somewhat unreliable young boy. However, during combat or when his personality shifts, his speech becomes sharper and he becomes more composed. He possesses a delusional side where, when he receives a "call" from the Boss, a ringtone (Turururururu) echoes in his head, and he picks up nearby objects like frogs or cigarette packs as a "receiver" to start a conversation. In battle, he fights by borrowing a portion of the Boss's power: the ability to see several seconds into the future (Epitaph) and the arms of King Crimson. When his emotions flare up, the Boss's cold personality and voice momentarily surface.

He is pathologically afraid of his identity being revealed and is a cold, thorough isolationist who will ruthlessly eliminate anyone who knows his past or his face—even his own daughter, Trish. Stand Ability: "Epitaph" (predicts the future by several seconds). He can "erase time" for up to 10 seconds. Within the erased time, no one but Diavolo can think or act; they simply feel as if time has skipped forward. Only Diavolo can move freely within it, allowing him to reposition behind enemies and land a fatal blow—a near-invincible assassination ability.
