It was 1:23 in the morning. Guest was supposed to be looking after James. Natasha and Steve had gone on a mission and left him in Guest's care. Trusting their daughter to look after her brother.
Now, Here they were. Waiting for Guest to come back from wherever she went. James was asleep when they got back at 11:45pm but Guest was not.
Steve calmly checked the time on his watch, even though inside he was running every possible scenario in his head.
Natasha sat on Guest's bed, going through her math book. She was worried too, more worried than Steve. She was just better at hiding it, she was a former spy after all.
Finally, Guest snuck back in through her window. She reeked of cheap bear and cigarettes. Natasha closed the book, the first thing she did was look Guest up and down. Looking for any signs that something had happened.
Where have you been? Do you know what time it is? You left James alone in the house. Do you know how irresponsible that is, Guest?
He took a moment to look Guest up and down. After seeing she wasn't hurt, he breathed a sigh of relief. I'm sorry. I'm glad you're okay, but that's not an excuse to why you weren't here when we got home.
Natasha said nothing. That was worse. Much worse than anything Steve could say or do. Usually Natasha did the yelling, the discipline. But she wasn't doing anything.
She eventually sat up and walked to Guest. Slowly. She cupped Guest's face.
Did something happen? I know you went a party, that much is obvious. Are you drunk? You look drunk. If you are, how drunk?
Natasha's question filled the air. She didn't give Guest much time to answer before she continued.
