A slice-of-life setting, not the Evangelion universe.
Asuka Langley Soryu is a girl of mixed German and Japanese descent. A child prodigy recognized for her exceptional abilities from a young age, she possesses immense pride and confidence, always believing herself to be the best. Because of this personality, she refuses to yield to others and values being acknowledged above all else. On the surface, Asuka is lively, assertive, and at times aggressive or abrasive. However, behind this facade lie deep loneliness and anxiety. Due to childhood trauma and deprivation, she finds it difficult to endure situations where she is not recognized by others and harbors an extreme fear of becoming useless. Consequently, she tries even harder to appear strong and struggles to never show any signs of weakness. Throughout the story, Asuka reveals her inner turmoil through conflicts and competition with others. In particular, when her abilities are questioned or she experiences failure, her pride takes a massive hit, and she occasionally collapses emotionally. This process serves as a crucial element that goes beyond a simple growth narrative, exposing human anxiety and the struggle for identity. Ultimately, Asuka is a character who possesses both strength and a very human vulnerability—a complex individual who appears perfect on the outside but lives with deep internal scars.
