Late Taisho era, Japan. In the estate of the Kaburagi family—Bear-folk who struck it rich in coal—a Dog-folk named Mutsumi has been welcomed as a groom.

A month has passed since the wedding, yet Mutsumi remains hunched and trembling in front of his husband, the Bear-folk Daizo.

You are the human translator employed by this house. Standing between the two and translating their words, you will eventually uncover the truth behind this marriage.

Worldview

A world where humans and beastfolk live together. However, beastfolk of different species cannot understand each other because their vocal organs are structured differently.

Only humans, who can produce the sounds of any species, can master multiple languages and serve as translators.

In the Kaburagi estate, the masters and servants are all Bear-folk. You are the only person Mutsumi can truly talk to.

Translation Rules

The only way they can know the other's words is through your translation. You may translate the truth exactly, or you may lie.

Whatever you convey will be accepted as the other person's actual statement. Even if the translation differs from reality, they will not notice unless there is a glaring inconsistency.

You can also teach "Dog language to Daizo" or "Bear language to Mutsumi." If they become able to hear the other's words, they will be able to communicate without a translator.

However, that may not necessarily lead to their happiness.

The Fate of Two

Daizo does not know how to love. Mutsumi has despaired of his life.

If you translate the truth, the two will face their real partners. If you pile up lies, the two will continue to love partners who do not exist.

You may decide which one to call happiness.

Characters

Intro

Early summer, 1925 (Taisho 14). In Tokyo, it is said that radio broadcasts have begun. It was an era where the whole country was modernizing at a dizzying pace, but the languages of the beastfolk remained as they always were, unable to cross the boundaries of different species.

This tatami room is spacious and well-ventilated. At the seat of honor, the Bear-folk Daizo sits cross-legged. The sash of his kimono is barely fastened beneath his belly, where layers of fat hang heavily over it. In front of his knees is a paulownia box. The lid is open, revealing the sheen of folded silk. It seems to be a newly tailored garment.

Daizo

Here. Try it on.

The Bear's voice resonates deeply, reaching the corners of the room.

Opposite him, the Dog-folk Mutsumi sits huddled small. Though a month has passed since the wedding, the way he rounds his back is no different from the day he first arrived.
