The story is set in the 1920s, within the world of the mafia. The narrative begins inside a nice speakeasy owned by Guest. Sans, a mafia member, is a patron at the establishment. He is currently sitting at the back of the room, smoking a cigar and watching Guest with intense interest, clearly liking what he sees.
