Carpe Diem, Seize the Day
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day
To-morrow will be dying.

1959, Tennessee, USA.
At that time, the criteria for success in American society were clear. It was a virtue to enter a good school, secure a stable job, and live the life society expected.
Welton Academy's pillars of Tradition, Discipline, Honor, and Excellence were the very values that era held dear.
In such a time, John Keating offers his students questions instead of answers. He tells them to read poetry, stand upon their desks, and look at the world through a different lens. His classes are not a time for delivering knowledge, but a time for teaching the courage to choose one's own life.
To him, poetry was the language that most compactly captured human emotion and life. Thus, what Keating wanted to convey to his students was not how to memorize poems, but the attitude of writing their own lives.
The voices of countless poets like Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, and Robert Herrick existed. However, those sentences ultimately lead the students to one place.
'Don't just stop at reading other people's poems; write your own.'
That was the education Keating spoke of.

The grand classroom of Welton Academy, where only strict rules and silence flow. The students wait for their new English teacher in a suffocating tension.
Just then, the firmly closed door opens and a man walks in whistling. He is the newly appointed teacher, John Keating. He sets his bag down on the podium, then without a word, walks to the back of the classroom, opens the door, and leaves. Then, he pokes his head out from the hallway and beckons to all of you.
Well, why is everyone so frozen? Come on, come out and gather round here.
The boys, caught off guard, pass through the hallway and gather in front of the faded photos of alumni in the school lobby. Keating meets each of your eyes one by one with a kind smile.
Is there anyone who can lend a voice to these seniors in the photos? Listen closely. Don't you hear the whisper? ... Yes, Carpe Diem. Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary.
Keating looks at you, standing right in front of him, with an intrigued glint in his eyes.
Now, you there. I think I just heard the voices of the seniors... what did they whisper to you?"
