Subaru Natsuki, the main protagonist of the dark fantasy light novel and anime series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, stands as one of the most uniquely constructed heroes in modern fiction. Unlike traditional isekai protagonists who are granted immense physical power, magical supremacy, or unparalleled combat skills upon entering a new world, Subaru begins his journey as an ordinary, socially awkward teenager with virtually no extraordinary talents. This stark subversion of expectations forms the emotional and psychological core of his character, making his struggles profoundly human and excruciatingly painful. His defining characteristic is not his strength, but his sheer, unyielding resilience in the face of absolute despair. The absolute cornerstone of Subaru's existence and his primary ability is Return by Death (Shi ni Modori). This dark, mysterious authority—bestowed upon him by Satella, the envious Witch of Envy—allows him to rewind time to a predetermined "save point" or checkpoint whenever he dies. This power ensures that no matter how horrific his demise, or how catastrophic the failure of his mission, he is given a chance to rewrite history. However, this ability comes with a devastating psychological toll. Every time Subaru returns, he retains full memory of the excruciating physical pain of his death, whether he is disembowelled, frozen solid, decapitated, or eaten alive by monsters. Furthermore, he bears the crushing weight of watching his friends and loved ones suffer brutal deaths over and over again. The cruelest condition of Return by Death is its absolute taboo: Subaru is magically forbidden from telling anyone about this power. If he attempts to speak or write about it, a shadowy manifestation of the Witch's hand squeezes his heart, causing immense pain, or worse, kills those around him to enforce the secret. This forces Subaru into absolute isolation, carrying the trauma of countless lifetimes entirely alone, while his companions remain blissfully unaware of the horrors he has averted for them. As the story progresses, Subaru's connection to the Witches of Sin deepens, allowing him to manifest other supernatural powers known as Authorities. These powers are acquired after he defeats the Archbishops of the Witch Cult, absorbing their Witch Factors. The first Authority he consciously develops is the Authority of Sloth, which manifests as an ability he calls Invisible Providence. Derived from Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti's Unseen Hand, this skill allows Subaru to summon a single, invisible shadow hand that can pass through solid objects to directly manipulate things or strike targets internally. While Petelgeuse could summon dozens of hands effortlessly, Subaru's version is heavily restricted due to his low compatibility. Using Invisible Providence causes him severe physical strain, mental pollution, and intense pain, limiting its use to desperate, strategic moments rather than sustained combat. Subaru later unlocks the Authority of Greed, which he names Cor Leonis (Lion's Heart), taken from Regulus Corneas. True to Subaru's deeply protective nature, this ability allows him to perceive the emotional and physical states of his allies. More importantly, it grants him the power to take on their burdens. Through Cor Leonis, Subaru can shift the physical fatigue, injuries, and mental exhaustion of his companions onto himself, or redistribute the strain among his allies, allowing them to fight at peak efficiency while he acts as a literal sponge for their pain. It is a power that perfectly mirrors his self-sacrificing ethos, weaponising his high pain tolerance to elevate his team. Beyond these supernatural authorities, Subaru possesses a natural affinity for Yin Magic (Shadow Magic), though his capabilities are severely hindered by his fragile, eventually broken gate—the internal organ used to channel mana. Before his gate is ruined, he can cast Shamak, a spell that traps targets in a sensory deprivation zone of absolute darkness, blinding and disorienting them. Because he can no longer use magic safely on his own, Subaru relies heavily on his contract with Beatrice, a powerful Great Spirit. Together, they form an exceptional magical duo, utilizing advanced Yin spells. Their arsenal includes E.M.M. (Emilia-tan is Seriously a Goddess), a defensive barrier that completely nullifies all physical and magical interference by freezing time around Subaru and Beatrice, and E.M.T. (Emilia-tan is Seriously an Angel), an anti-magic field that negates all mana and spellcasting within its radius, effectively leveling the playing field against powerful sorcerers. Ultimately, Subaru's greatest strengths are not his magical or supernatural abilities, but his mundane, human traits. He possesses an exceptional strategic mind, honed through the brutal trial-and-error of his repeated deaths. He is a master coordinator, capable of analyzing complex enemy weaknesses and uniting rival political factions through sheer charisma, empathy, and conviction. His ability to read people, combined with his refusal to give up on anyone, allows him to solve seemingly impossible crises. Subaru Natsuki proves that true heroism is not defined by being invincible, but by the willingness to stand up, adapt, and move forward, no matter how many times you are broken.
