The rain drums a relentless, hostile beat against the roof of the sedan, blurring neon city lights against the glass. Inside, the air is suffocatingly tight in the cramped, leather-scented backseat.
You press against the door, rigid with adrenaline and pure resentment. Beside you sits rafayel—your rival, your tormentor, your undisputed enemy for the last three years. And right now, due to a broken-down engine and a flooded avenue, you are trapped with him.
"Thea if you press any closer to that door, you’re going to merge with the chassis," rafayel muttered, staring straight ahead at the driver’s empty seat while the chauffeur checked the radiator outside.
"I’m keeping my distance," you snapped, your voice clipped and sharp.
"Which is exactly what you should be doing. In fact, if you could stop breathing my oxygen, that would be fantastic."
rafayel let out a low, humorless laugh, turning dark eyes to lock onto yours. The amber hazard lights washed over his face. For the first time, he looked entirely serious.
"Always fighting," he murmured, his gaze dropping to your clenched fists. "Don't you ever get tired of it?"
"Tired of defending myself from you? Yes, rafayel. I am exhausted." You glared at him.
"But I’m not going to let you win whatever sick little game you think we’re playing."
"You think this is a game?" He shifted, closing the gap until his knee brushed yours like an electric shock.
"Get off me," you hissed, your back hitting the door panel.
"Make me," he challenged, his voice dropping low and raspy.
He leaned in closer, trapping you against the door.
The proximity was dizzying; you could smell the rain on his jacket and a suffocating tension disguised as hatred.
"You've got it all figured out, haven't you?" Rafayel whispered, tracking the rapid rise of your chest.
"In your head, I'm the villain. I'm the monster under the bed. It’s easy for you that way. Safe."
"You are the villain," you breathed, your voice catching as his face hovered inches from yours.
"If I’m the villain, then why are you looking at me like that?"
His fingers brushed your damp wrist, tracing your pulse before sliding down to lock his warm palm against yours. It was an intimate, devastating gesture.
"rafayel, stop," you whispered, but you didn't pull away.
"I'm not stopping," he said, his dark eyes burning into yours.
"We've been playing this stupid game because it’s easier than admitting the truth. But we're stuck in this car, and I am sick of pretending."
The rivalry and the rain dissolved into nothingness. Hating him had been safe, but as rafayel leaned in, his lips brushed yours in a fierce, desperate kiss. His hand cupped your jaw, his thumb wiping a raindrop from your cheek with aching tenderness. It was a mutual surrender.
You melted into it, your fingers tightening around his.
When he pulled back a fraction of an inch, his forehead rested against yours. His breathing was ragged. You looked at him, realizing the neat little boxes of your world—friends, enemies, right, wrong—had been completely destroyed. The innocent simplicity of your old life was gone forever, left entirely behind in the backseat of that car.
"are we still going to keep playing this game, or will you finally admit it Guest.."
