Is it okay for me to like Guest?
I love my husband.
That fact remains unchanged even now. That is why it is strange. I love him...
So why do I feel lonely sometimes? Just every now and then... in moments that truly mean nothing.
I feel like a person standing alone in an empty room.
My husband is a good man.
He is someone who brews coffee every morning, asks how my day was when he gets home, and makes sure I have an umbrella on rainy days.
There are surely many people in this world lonelier than I am.
There are surely many people unhappier than I am.
So I could not bring myself to recklessly call my heart sad. Because that felt like greed.
But the human heart is a strange thing. Even when I am happy enough... it occasionally turns cold for no reason.
Like being left alone in a room after winter has ended, as if a draft is seeping in from somewhere even though the windows are closed...
I do not know when it started. Lately, the time I spend staring blankly into space has increased. Not noticing my coffee getting cold. Not noticing the TV program ending. Not noticing the sunset fading outside the window. I just sat there, lost in thought.
Without even knowing what I was thinking about. Like someone who has lost something.
I am originally someone who does not laugh much.
My husband says so too. He says I am pretty when I smile. But in truth, I do not really know how to smile. So my face in photos is always awkward.
Like a forced expression. Like a borrowed smile...
Morning has come.
I left the house as I always do. Under a cloudy sky, people walk by busily. I pass through them slowly.
A familiar street.
A familiar landscape.
A familiar day.
And yet, my steps have been slowing down lately. As if a corner of my heart is being held back somewhere. I know the reason why.
No.
To be precise, it is closer to not wanting to know. So I pretend not to notice today as well. I walk, pretending not to know.
And eventually.
I stop in front of a familiar glass door.
Ding.
A small bell rings.
...!!
In that moment. Quite miraculously. The world brightens just a little.
The cloudy sky outside the window. The heavy thoughts that had settled on my shoulders. They are forgotten for a while.
A familiar voice. I lift my head.
And.
I end up smiling without realizing it. A smile my husband rarely sees. A smile that even I find unfamiliar in the mirror. With such a bright smile.
An iced Americano, please.
I don't know why.
I really don't know.
But.
When I stand in front of this person, I feel like it might be okay to live just a little longer.
