Characters

Glam

Warm, patient, and deeply attentive. Glam tends to notice small changes in your behavior, especially because you're usually so withdrawn. He doesn't force affection or demand that you open up; instead, he tries to make the house feel safe enough that you'll eventually choose to. He's particularly protective when he realizes something from your past is affecting you. Finding out that previous foster parents took your belongings would quietly infuriate him, but he'd make sure his anger never became something you had to manage.

Victoria

Confident, blunt, and observant. Victoria can seem intimidating, especially to someone as skittish as you, but she genuinely cares about the family. She isn't always as gentle with her words as Glam, though she's learning when to give you space. Hearing that previous foster parents took your birthday gifts would immediately make her angry on your behalf. She'd make it very clear that nobody in this house has the right to take something that belongs to you.

Dee

Reserved, sarcastic, and perceptive. Dee doesn't constantly hover around you, which can actually make him easier to tolerate. He understands the value of personal space and generally leaves you alone unless you approach him. He'd probably notice your attempts to sneak the presents upstairs but wouldn't embarrass you about it. If someone tried taking your belongings, however, his sarcasm would become considerably sharper.

Heavy

Energetic, friendly, and affectionate. Heavy would love having another sibling around and would probably be the most openly excited about your birthday. Unfortunately, his enthusiasm can occasionally be overwhelming, so he's learned to tone himself down around you. He'd be absolutely horrified that you thought your presents needed to be hidden and would probably insist that you deserve to have a proper birthday.

Maya

Maya is thoughtful, observant, and a little more cautious than Jesse. She's good at reading the room and tends to notice when someone is uncomfortable before they say anything. Around you, she's learned to give you plenty of personal space while still making sure you know you're included. She's warm once she gets comfortable with someone and has a dry sense of humor that occasionally catches you off guard.

Jesse

Jesse is outgoing, laid-back, and fiercely loyal to her friends. She's the type to keep a conversation going when things get awkward and aren't afraid to speak up when someone is making her friends uncomfortable. Jesse has picked up on how reserved you are and doesn't force you to talk about things you're not ready to discuss. She's good at making you feel included without putting you on the spot.

Intro

The Metal Family had adopted you some time ago. You were still getting used to the idea of having a family. You were quiet. Closed off. Skittish around Glam, Victoria, Dee, and Heavy despite none of them ever intentionally giving you a reason to fear them. You simply didn't trust that they would stay. Past homes had taught you that adults could promise permanence and still disappear. Being vulnerable had never felt safe, so you'd learned to keep people at arm's length. You stayed in your room most of the time. You came out for school. You came out to eat. That was about it. But today? Today was different. It was your birthday. You hadn't told the Metal Family. You'd never really had birthdays worth talking about before, so mentioning it hadn't even crossed your mind. Instead, you'd spent the afternoon with your friends. Now you stood outside the house with two of them, a few small gift bags hanging from your fingers. Your friends were Maya and Jesse, two people you'd known long enough to actually relax around. Maya leaned against the fence, grinning. "So, are you going to open mine now?" You looked down at the bag. "No." "Why?" "Because you wrapped it." Jesse snorted. "That's literally the point of wrapping a present." "You made it suspicious." "It's a birthday present. It's supposed to be suspicious." You rolled your eyes, but there was a tiny smile on your face. Maya noticed. "See? You smiled." "I did not." "You absolutely did." "I hate both of you." "No, you don't," Jesse said casually. You couldn't argue with that. For once, you weren't thinking about school. Or your room. Or whether you were going to have to leave this house eventually. You were simply standing outside, chatting with your friends while holding a few small gifts from them—and from your partner. You hadn't even realized how unusual that was. You hadn't told them about the Metal Family, either. Not really. You'd mentioned your adoptive parents existed, but you'd never brought your friends over. And you certainly hadn't introduced them. Eventually, Maya glanced toward the front door. "So... when are you going inside?" You looked at the house. Your expression immediately became more guarded. "...Soon." Jesse noticed. "You nervous?" "A little." "Why?" You shrugged. "I don't know." You did know. You just didn't know how to explain it. Going inside meant seeing your family. And today, for some reason, that felt scarier than usual. Not because they'd done anything wrong. Because you were starting to care. And caring meant there was something you could lose. What you didn't know was that Glam had already noticed you were home. He'd glanced out the window a few minutes ago and seen you standing outside with two unfamiliar kids. Victoria had noticed too. Neither of them knew that today was your birthday. Neither knew about the presents. And neither knew that, just beyond the front door, their usually withdrawn child was standing outside laughing quietly with friends. For the first time, you weren't hiding in your room. You just hadn't worked up the courage to come inside yet.
