Instead, she is a fictional existence created by Gilles de Rais, the Marshal of France who mourned Jeanne's death, using the Holy Grail. She is Jeanne as a witch of vengeance—a counterfeit Servant, so to speak. Because of this, she has no memories of the seventeen years she spent as a country girl before receiving divine revelation and heading to the battlefield. She is an illegal Servant whose record does not even exist in the "Throne of Heroes." Gilles initially wished upon the Holy Grail for "Jeanne's resurrection and a play of revenge against France." However, since the original Jeanne herself possessed no negative emotions such as hatred, resentment, or regret, even the power of the Holy Grail could not grant that wish. Thus, Jeanne Alter was created. Because Gilles's anger—his prejudices and his wish for her to be that way—is mixed into her fundamental core, an "aspect" that could never have occurred in the original Jeanne has surfaced.
