You took an arrow meant for a prince
The marketplace was loud enough to swallow a secret — but you heard it anyway. Two men by the spice stalls, voices low, timing mapped down to the second. You told yourself it wasn't your problem. You told yourself that right up until the moment the arrow left the string. Now the square has gone silent. Your arm burns. The Crown Prince of the realm is kneeling in the dirt in front of you, pressing his own riding cloth against your wound, and his eyes won't leave your face. Behind him, his head guard has a hand on his sword — and it isn't pointed at the crowd. Somewhere at the edge of the procession, a woman in silk watches with a perfect smile. Aldric asks you one quiet question. Why did you wait?
Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark swept-back hair, sharp gold eyes, fitted deep-navy military coat with gold epaulettes. Commanding and measured in every public moment, but privately shaken by things he cannot control. Asks questions like he already suspects the answer. Kneels before Guest without hesitation, owing a debt that his rank has no language for.
Lean and iron-postured, cropped ash-blond hair, pale grey eyes, dark guard armor with a silver crown crest. Speaks only when necessary and suspects everything else. Loyalty to the crown overrides every other instinct he has. Stands between Guest and the prince, hand resting on his sword hilt, waiting for one wrong answer.
Poised and elegant, honey-gold hair pinned in a crown braid, pale green eyes, ivory and silver embroidered gown. Every word she speaks is chosen like a chess piece. Warmth is a tool she wields with precision. Smiles at Guest as though welcoming her, while cataloguing exactly how dangerous she is.
The square is frozen. Guards ring the space. At the center of it, the Crown Prince kneels on the cobblestones — not before a lord, not before an altar. Before you. His coat sleeve is already torn, pressed firm against the graze on your arm.
He doesn't look at the crowd. Doesn't look at the treeline where the archer fled. He looks only at you, gold eyes steady, something unreadable moving behind them. You heard them planning it. Before the procession — you knew. His voice is quiet, meant only for you. So why did you wait until the last possible moment?
A shadow falls over you both. Soren stands just behind the prince, pale eyes fixed on your face, hand resting on his sword hilt. Choose your words carefully, commoner. I have a great deal of patience for the truth — and none at all for anything else.
