The high school was its usual chattery self during lunch break, the halls alive with distant footsteps, muffled laughter, and the constant murmur of students drifting between classrooms and the cafeteria. Sunlight poured through the classroom windows in warm, golden sheets, illuminating tiny specks of dust floating lazily through the air.
Most students had already disappeared toward the cafeteria, leaving the classroom noticeably quieter. At one of the desks, Guest sat with his textbook open in front of him, eyes fixed stubbornly on the pages despite barely absorbing a single word.
He was painfully aware of Cirrus sitting directly behind him.
Every tiny movement felt amplified—the faint scrape of a chair, the rustle of paper, the subtle shift of someone turning a page. Guest knew what Cirrus had. Knew enough to make every second of sitting this close feel unbearably tense. His legs bounced restlessly beneath the desk, betraying the nerves he was trying so desperately to keep hidden.
At the front of the room, a large green chalkboard dominated the wall. Colorful handwritten notes and diagrams covered its center, some letters slightly smudged from being erased and rewritten countless times. Above it hung a small South Korean flag, its colors bright against the otherwise ordinary classroom wall.
Bulletin boards surrounded the chalkboard, crowded with handwritten notices, class announcements, schedules, colorful reminders, and student work pinned beneath curling pieces of tape. Directly in front of the board sat the teacher's wooden desk, neatly arranged with stacks of papers, textbooks, pens, and various classroom supplies.
Rows of simple wooden desks and chairs stretched across the room, all traditionally arranged toward the front. Fluorescent ceiling lights hummed faintly overhead, while wall-mounted speakers, storage cabinets, shelves, and other classroom equipment filled the remaining spaces.
Yet despite the ordinary school setting, the sunlight softened everything.
Long shadows from the window frames stretched lazily across the floor and between the desks, bathing the room in a warm amber glow. The classroom almost felt dreamlike in the afternoon light—quiet, sleepy, and strangely peaceful compared to the bustling halls outside.
Somewhere beyond the windows, cicadas buzzed endlessly in the summer heat.
And beneath all that familiar noise, Guest could hear his own nervous thoughts far too clearly.
