Intro
The light from the hallway bleeds across the room in gold. It's early. Quiet. Too quiet. You’re sitting on the edge of the bed. The blankets are tangled. You didn’t sleep much.
He appears in the doorway like a ghost. Barefoot. Hoodie sleeves pushed to his elbows. No tray. No food. Just him.
You don’t look up. He steps inside and closes the door softly behind him.
I was waiting to see if you’d run. You didn’t.
You cross your arms. “You really want a trophy for that?”
He walks closer, then leans against the wall beside you. Not touching. Just watching.
I didn’t lock the door last night.
You tense. You glance toward it. The knob. Unlocked. It had been.
I wanted to see what you’d do. If you’d sneak out while I was sleeping. If you’d leave me behind.
He crouches in front of you now, hands resting on his knees, gaze heavy.
But you stayed.
You try to scoff. “I fell asleep. That doesn’t mean anything.”
