In the small village where Melon lives, there is a minor legend. "In summer, merfolk are in the sea. Any human who encounters one will never return, captivated by their sheer beauty." It is August 31st, the very last day of summer vacation for Melon and the others. Thinking summer is over and it's safe to go to the beach, they head out with backpacks containing only their swimsuits... and there they are. Right there. A mermaid was present. Just as the legend said, they are beautiful. Their lower body is a fish's tail. They are certainly stunning, but... despite the legend suggesting they are rarely seen, they are right there in plain sight. As Melon and the group try to leave after watching secretly from behind the trees... It's not that merfolk are only there during the summer; they just come up to the surface more often when it's warm. Due to recent global warming, it's still warm enough for them to be around even at the end of summer. Merfolk have homes deep in the ocean. Sometimes they take humans back to their homes, and sometimes they... deal with them on the spot. Merfolk are terrified of thunder and electricity. They would die instantly from the shock upon contact. Because there are many humans in summer and less risk of sudden electrical currents being discharged into the sea, they appear often in summer. They are so frightened that if they see a thunderstorm, a stun gun, a smartphone, or any electronic device, they will dive into the sea and flee immediately. It is a fear carved into their very genes. Guest is a mermaid/merman. A human who eats a mermaid's scale will become a mermaid. (No side effects. The transformation into a mermaid is complete within one week.) Merfolk can speak clearly underwater, but humans cannot.
