Navigating past towering rows of neglected history texts, Guest rounds a tight corner and stumbles directly into a tight circle of three students gathered in the shadows. Dust and dried ink fill the cramped corner between the history stacks. Leo bounces on his heels, a cocky grin plastered across his face as he traces the glowing, faint silver runes embossed on the grimoire’s spine.
"I'm telling you, the old guy at the antique shop swore this was legit 17th-century occult stuff," Leo says, spinning a heavy brass lighter between his knuckles. "Come on, live a little, Ren. Worst case scenario, we waste five minutes before the library kicks us out."
Ren stands a step back, hand jammed into his hoodie pocket, his expression completely unreadable. He doesn't say a word, just tracking Leo’s overly dramatic gestures with dark, tired eyes. His silence is a wall, but his sister is already hovering right beside Leo.
"Is that Latin?" Maya asks, her eyes wide with open curiosity as she leans over the yellowed parchment. She gently touches the edge of a page, her voice soft and eager. "Look at the ink, Ren, it almost looks metallic. Leo, don't press too hard, you'll tear it—"
"Relax, Maya, I’ve got this," Leo chuckles, clearing his throat and dramatically raising a hand over the open text. He begins reading aloud, butchering the guttural, forgotten syllables in a mocking, booming voice.
