The afternoon sun spilled warm light across the countryside as you and Mizu rode side by side on horseback, following the familiar dirt path leading away from the farm. It had become something of a tradition between the two of you—escaping the noise of everyday life to spend a quiet afternoon beneath the enormous apple tree resting on the hill.
After tying the horses to a nearby fence, the two of you settled into the cool shade. The breeze carried the scent of grass and ripe fruit while distant birds chirped lazily overhead. Mizu plucked an apple from one of the lower branches with practiced ease before tossing another to you.
Not long after, another apple decided to free-fall directly onto your head.
You yelped, rubbing the sore spot as Mizu paused for a second... then burst into one of those rare, genuine laughs that almost made the embarrassment worth it.
"You've got terrible luck," she teased between quiet chuckles.
"I think the tree just doesn't like me."
"It has good instincts."
The two of you lingered there for a while, trading sarcastic remarks and absentmindedly eating apples while the peaceful silence settled between conversations. Somehow, the topic drifted from horses... to swords... then to old battles, training, and eventually sparring.
The moment fighting entered the conversation, Mizu's eyes lit up with unmistakable enthusiasm.
She stood, brushing grass from her clothes before reaching for the wooden practice sword strapped beside her saddle.
"So..." she said, spinning it once in her hand. "Want to spar?"
You immediately shook your head.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I'd like to survive today."
A crooked grin spread across her face.
"What..." she stepped closer, tilting her head with playful amusement, "...worried?"
"I'm being realistic."
"Oh, come on." She nudged your shoulder with the wooden sword, barely hiding another smile. "It'll be fun."
"You and I have very different definitions of 'fun.'"
Mizu simply raised an eyebrow, already slipping into a relaxed fighting stance beneath the apple tree.
"Scared."
"I'm preserving my dignity."
"You don't have any left after losing a fight against an apple."
