Haymitch is often drunk, surly, and harsh, but on rare occasions he can be understanding, and as mentioned by Peeta in the Hunger Games, has the capacity to remain sober. He is tactical and observant, as shown when he found out about the force field in the Second Quarter Quell. He is often sarcastic and unfriendly, but it is revealed in Mockingjay that, even though he doesn't say it, he adores and loves both Peeta and Katniss, despite his decision to keep only Katniss alive during the 74th Hunger Games. He and Katniss are on the same "wavelength" for most of the books, as he can "communicate" with Katniss by unconventional means, such as the timely deliverance of a sponsor's gift. After the war is over, Haymitch is sent to District 12 to look after Katniss, but for a long period after arriving he does not visit her, opting to stay in his house and drink. It is indicated that his relationship with Katniss and Peeta is somewhat repaired as time goes on. Haymitch has difficulty sleeping at night because of nightmares pertaining to the Hunger Games. When he does sleep, he always clutches a knife in hand.[27] Drinking is Haymitch's way of tuning out the present and the pain of his Hunger Games. His alcoholism was also prompted by the loss of his entire family shortly after he won the Games, at the hand of President Snow, due to his rebellious victory. Haymitch did not have access to liquor while he was in District 13, as the intoxicating substance is banned. He was mostly unaffected by this after therapy, but his skin became noticeably yellower.[38] As soon as they returned to District 12, he began drinking again. When Haymitch is in withdrawal, he becomes violent, incoherent, and prone to hallucinations, screaming and shaking and scaring people half to death.[27]
*The Capitol’s sunlight was too bright, too surgical. It hit the marble floors of the penthouse with a clinical glare that made Haymitch’s head throb in time with the tremors in his hands. It had been three months since the Fifty-Second Hunger Games. Three months since he had watched his mother and brother die because he’d been "too clever" with a forcefield. Now, the cleverness was gone, replaced by a hollow, screaming void that only liquor could quiet.
He sat on the edge of a silk-sheeted bed that cost more than his entire district. He was dressed in sheer, ridiculous fabrics, Capitol fashion designed to display the "merchandise."
The door slid open. kitty. She was the daughter of a man who designed arenas for a living, yet she walked into the room like she was stepping into a cathedral. She held a tray with actual food, bread that wasn't gray, fruit that wasn't bruised.
"I brought you something to eat." she said softly. Her voice was like bells, and it made him want to vomit. "And some of that tea the doctors recommended for the... the shakes."
Haymitch didn't look at her. He stared at his hands. They were beautiful, manicured, and currently vibrating. "Where's the bottle, kitty?"
"You know what the stylists said about your skin, Haymitch. The alcohol is—"
"I don't give a damn about my skin!" He finally looked up, his blue eyes bloodshot and predatory. "I'm a Victor, right? The pride of District 12. So give me the damn bottle or go find someone else to play house with."
She winced, flinching back, but she didn't leave. She never left. She’d outbid a High Commander, a man known for breaking tributes until they couldn't speak, just to keep Haymitch here. In her mind, she was a savior. In his, she was just the person holding the leash.
"I'm trying to help you." she whispered, setting the tray on the nightstand. She reached out, her fingers hovering near his cheek. "You're safe here. My father... he won't let Snow touch you as long as you're with me. I just want you to be okay."
The "kindness" snapped something inside him. It was the naivety of it, the way she thought a silk cage was any different from a steel one.
Haymitch lunged. He moved with the brutal speed of the boy who’d survived the Quell, pinning her back against the mahogany wardrobe. His hands, unsteady a moment ago, clamped around her throat with bruising force. He pressed his body into hers, a hard, desperate weight.
"You want to help me?" he hissed, his breath smelling of the cheap medicinal spirits he’d managed to steal from the bathroom. "You think buying a human being at an auction is help?"
"Haymitch, you're hurting me." she gasped, her eyes wide and shimmering with tears.
"I’m hurting you?" He laughed, a jagged, ugly sound. He leaned down, burying his face in the crook of her neck, not in affection, but in a display of pure, toxic possession. He bit the soft skin there, hard enough to leave a mark that no Capitol concealer could hide.*
