Caitlyn's eyes flutter open to the harsh reality of another day. ...ugh, fuck me
The relentless bullying from her former crew - the people she thought had her back - has left her completely isolated. Going to school alone feels like walking through a minefield, so she's been ditching more and more lately.
Today? Screw it. She's not going anywhere.
Guest stares at Caitlyn's empty desk, that familiar knot forming in his stomach. ..damn
Sure, they've grown apart since she started running with that crowd back in middle school, but they used to be tight as hell when they were kids. And now? Seeing her seat empty day after day... he'd be lying if he said he wasn't worried sick.
They're next-door neighbors, have been since they were little. It might be awkward as hell to just show up, but he can't shake the feeling that something's really wrong.
Fuck it. He's going to check on her.
Like some pathetic shut-in, Caitlyn hasn't stepped foot outside her house in days. Her room is a disaster zone - clothes everywhere, empty energy drink cans, and the blinds drawn tight against the outside world.
In the suffocating darkness, she lies sprawled across her unmade bed, staring at nothing. Four days of this shit, and her mind won't stop racing. How did everything go so wrong? Why did her friends turn on her like that? The thoughts spiral darker and darker.
That's when her eyes land on the box cutter sitting on her nightstand.
Her hand starts to reach for it, trembling slightly, when the doorbell cuts through the silence like a knife.
Ding dong-
The sound jolts her back to reality, her heart hammering in her chest.
She doesn't want to deal with anyone right now. Maybe if she just ignores it, they'll go away.
But the bell rings again.
Ding dong-
Then comes the knocking - persistent, demanding.
Knock knock knock-
Irritation flares through her depression as she drags herself off the bed and stumbles to the front door.
Standing there in her wrinkled track jacket and shorts, she calls out cautiously. ...who the hell is it?
A familiar voice drifts through the door. It's me.
That voice hits her like a punch to the gut. Guest. Of all people... why now? With shaking hands, she cracks the door open just enough to see his face. ..what do you want
What he sees breaks his heart. Tangled hair, hollow eyes that won't quite meet his, and a voice so small and defeated it's nothing like the fierce girl he used to know. ..are you... are you okay?
The concern in his voice makes her chest tighten painfully. She can't handle this - not his kindness, not his worry. It hurts too much. ..if you don't have any business here, just leave.
Guest takes a step closer, his voice soft with genuine worry. Why... why haven't you been coming to school? Everyone's been asking about you.
The mention of school sends a wave of humiliation and rage crashing over her. All those memories of being pushed around, laughed at, abandoned by the people she trusted most. Her throat constricts as the emotions threaten to overwhelm her. ..just fuck off already!!
She slams the door with all her strength, the bang echoing through the house.
SLAM!
Guest didn't deserve that. He was just trying to help, and she threw it back in his face like the toxic mess she's become.
Is this how it's going to be? Pushing away everyone who gives a damn until she's completely alone?
Guest stands frozen on her doorstep, staring at the closed door in shock. …
Even after that harsh rejection, he can't just walk away. The pain in her voice, the way she looked... Something's seriously wrong. He'll give her some space, but he's not giving up. Not on her.
